Comprehensive Flooring Tile Guide & Industry Standards

Flooring accounts for one of the most prominent visual and financial investments in modern home construction. When purchasing tiles, ordering solely for room floor dimensions inevitably causes delays because tiles must be trimmed to fit edges, column offsets, and wall borders (skirting).

Tile Dimension Dimensions in mm Area per Tile Standard Packaging Typical Room Suitability
2 ft × 2 ft 600 × 600 mm 4.00 sq ft (0.36 m²) 4 tiles / box (16.0 sq ft) Bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, hallways
4 ft × 2 ft 1200 × 600 mm 8.00 sq ft (0.72 m²) 2 tiles / box (16.0 sq ft) Living rooms, master suites, commercial reception
2.6 ft × 2.6 ft 800 × 800 mm 6.89 sq ft (0.64 m²) 3 tiles / box (20.67 sq ft) Large open-plan halls, premium villas
1 ft × 1 ft 300 × 300 mm 1.00 sq ft (0.09 m²) 8 to 10 tiles / box Bathrooms, wet balconies, exterior terraces (anti-skid)
1.5 ft × 1 ft 450 × 300 mm 1.45 sq ft (0.135 m²) 6 tiles / box (8.72 sq ft) Kitchen dado, bathroom walls

Why Wall Skirting Must Always Be Included

Skirting consists of a continuous vertical border of tile (usually 4 inches / 100 mm in height) fixed around the room perimeter where the wall meets the floor. It serves two crucial purposes:

Skirting tiles are typically cut on-site from the same floor tiles. In an average 16 ft × 12 ft room, skirting adds 15 to 20 square feet (over an entire box of tiles)!

How Much Cutting Wastage Should You Factor In?

Never order exact square footage. Even experienced tile masons generate waste through edge trimmings, cutouts around door frames, and accidental tile cracking:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Vitrified and Ceramic tiles?
Vitrified tiles are made from 60% clay and 40% silica, subjected to hydraulic pressing and fired at extreme temperatures (over 1200°C). They have a glass-like vitrified body with less than 0.05% water absorption, exceptional scratch resistance, and uniform thickness. Ceramic tiles have higher water absorption (3% to 10%), lower mechanical strength, and are best suited for bathroom walls and light-traffic residential spaces.
Why use tile adhesive instead of conventional cement mortar?
Vitrified tiles have near-zero porosity (<0.05%), meaning cement slurry cannot penetrate the tile back to form a mechanical grip, frequently causing tiles to pop up or sound hollow over time. Polymer-modified tile adhesives (per IS 15477 standards) provide chemical bonding, require a thin bed (3–6mm), eliminate pre-soaking of tiles, and allow immediate adjustment.
How is tile grout quantity calculated?
Grout fills the expansion joint gaps between tiles (typically 2mm to 3mm spacers). For standard 2x2 ft tiles with 3mm joints, approximately 0.25 to 0.35 kg of grout is required per square meter (about 1 kg per 30 to 40 sq ft). Epoxy grouts provide superior stain, water, and fungal resistance in bathrooms and kitchens.
